The narrator was reflecting on the fact that suddenly he could imagine living beyond the short-term; that the possibility of a life fulfilled was real and possible. This struck me because, much like the speaker, I had spent most of the 80's listening to loud music, smoking bad hash and waiting for some butthead to push the button. see also :
