posts brought to you by the category “palmos”
Das eez kaput! Sometime around 2002 I spaced the entire database
table that mapped individual entries to categories. Such is life.
What follows is a random sampling of entries that were associated
with the category. Over time, the entries will be updated and then it
will be even more confusing. Wander around, though, it's still a fun
way to find stuff.

Resource Synchronization Framework (RSF)
"provides a simple, lightweight mechanism for
replicating files and other resources between remote hosts. RSF is meant
to accommodate centralized models (client/server) and decentralized
models (peer-to-peer). RSF is based on two XML files: a master
fingerprint file and a resource history file. The master fingerprint file
contains all the data necessary to execute basic synchronization between
two separate versions of the same files. The resource history file
contains data on a specific resource to facilitate a rollback or a
restore from a pervious version."

Dave Pawson : DocBook FAQ
"This is a collation of some Frequently Asked
questions regarding Docbook. The initial focus will be on the XML version
of the DTD, and the XSLT based stylesheets. Over time I may add faq's for
SGML and DSSSL. I will need help there though! I doubt if its possible to
keep up with the latest revision of the stylesheets, so please excuse me
(and let me know) if you find content that is out of date."
Simson Garfinkel : "Understanding the uses and power of sync is
vital
for accurately predicting the direction that the
Internet and e-commerce are likely to grow. Most people like the safety
that comes from having data in multiple locations, and the speed that
comes from having the data immediately available on their own computers.
Products and services that offer sync, therefore, will probably fare
better in the marketplace than similarly priced services that offer
high-speed access to data stored on remote systems. People don't want to
just tap into a data stream; they want to have their own copy of the
information, and they want it kept up-to-date.
George Sanderson : Apache::RedirectDBI.pm
"allows you to create a virtual path in your
document hierarchy. All requests for access to this virtual path should
require a username and password to access. When the user attempts to
access this virtual path their username is looked up in one or more
database tables. The table in which the username is found in determines
the physical path from which files are served."

maki: serving XML via Apache and Python
"maki is an attempt to glue together a simple,
flexible framework that allows you to use these technologies together to
serve web pages. It is a mod_python handler for Apache that is intended
to handle requests made to your server for XML files. When maki receives
such a request, it determines the path to the file, then searches through
its configuration to find the first rule that matches that path. Each
rule specifies one or more steps that are then to be executed."
Jon Udell : Managing Web Images
"Combining ImageMagick, JavaScript, and Perl"
bk2site
"will transform your Netscape bookmarks file into
a yahoo-like website with slashdot-like news. ... My goal is to enable
the user to establish zero-maintenance high-value (small) websites. I am
now using all the information in the bookmarks file, as well as some
simple recommender system techniques. ... It can also download (http)
other people's channels (RSS files) and display their contents in the
generated web pages." I don't remember whether or not you can manipulate
the bookmarks file with the Netscape Java/JavaScript hooks. If you could,
though, and were running Apache you could hack bk2site into a mod_perl
handler and manage your whole weblog, locally, with bookmarklets.
Interesting.
NY Times : A Happy, Scary New Day for Design
"Environmentalists use the term ecotone to
describe the area where two adjacent ecosystems — a wetland and a
forest, say — overlap. The ecotone has an ecology of its own. It
can support forms of life not found in either of the adjacent systems.
Today there exists the cultural equivalent of an ecotone between the old
and new economies, between the culture of industrial production and that
of informational exchange. Design today is flourishing in this region.
Its symbol is the veil, a graphic device that conveys the conflicting
desire to conceal and reveal."
Mordecai Richler : O, woe is Montreal
"In Montreal, only Schwartz's is capable of
warning us of the horror that could be coming our way. So, if you should
drive past and see a FERMÉ/CLOSED sign in the window, start your cars,
Montrealers. Quit town. The end is nigh." To his long list of accolades,
Mr. Richler can now add the much sought after and prestigious Aaronland
Shut the Fuck Up Award. This is either just incoherent gibberish about a
couple of professional sports teams or nostalgic pining for the olden
days when everything was better; atleast better than it is now. Worst
case, it is both. The 60's and 70's are over, kids. Montreal and Quebec
are different places now, and we don't all think singing

The iBall Project
"is a Distributed Production, MultiThreaded
video. It is called a Distributed Production because anyone with an
interest is encouraged to contribute a video clip to continue and extend

develop from the root scene." via

Wired : The Medium is the Community
"Most information that people might find useful
is not considered to be newsworthy, [Preecs] said, because it stretches
over a longer period than the daily news cycle most of the press adheres
to. He recommended using lots of volunteers working over the Internet to
cover local issues and events, and delve into subjects that do not follow

netomat
"netomat is a meta-browser that engages a
different Internet - an Internet that is an intelligent application and
not simply a large database of static files. netomat dialogues with the
net to retrieve information that is unmediated and independent in form.
With netomat, the user has a dialogue with the Internet. You can ask the
net a question using natural language. netomat responds by flowing text,
images and audio from the net to your screen. You respond or ask further
questions or write keywords and the flow of data to your desktop is
altered in response. The data is not constrained by a web page or site
but free floating and independent. netomat can retrieve almost all types
of data that resides on the Internet: jpegs, gifs, aiff, wav, html, xml
and plain text. netomat dialogues with you as well. It memorizes your
session to further enable your search and exploration of the Internet."

That Void In Cyberspace Looks a Lot Like Kansas
"The simulation has a way of going blank -- while

keep poking clownishly into the picture. "

dude, where's my car
This document uses
CSS
kung-fu and a small amount of JavaScript for rendering its
contents. Efforts have been made to separate the form from the
content so if you are viewing this in a text-based browser it
shouldn't be an issue.
On the other hand it may look funny if you are viewing it in a
browser with incomplete
CSS
and/or JavaScript implementations. Internet Explorer 6 comes to
mind.
It's not that I don't love you. However, my time is limited and
I no longer feel very good about spending it working around any one
browser's inconsistencies with little, or no, confidence that they
will ever be fixed or otherwise made more inconsistent at some
later date.
On the other hand, if something is down-right
unreadable
please let me know and I will endeavour to fix it.

yes, we have no bananas
This page may not validate. It's not that I don't care, it's
just that I'm not aware of it yet. Part of the reason that I
rewrote the entire back-end for managing this site is that the old
stuff made it too easy for these kinds of mistakes to slip through
the cracks.
