posts brought to you by the category “age of
access”
Das eez kaput! Sometime around 2002 I spaced the entire database
table that mapped individual entries to categories. Such is life.
What follows is a random sampling of entries that were associated
with the category. Over time, the entries will be updated and then it
will be even more confusing. Wander around, though, it's still a fun
way to find stuff.

Elliotte Rusty Harold : Remember Mixed Content
What's really telling in this example is that the community
promptly hacked their own uglier version of mixed content back into
RSS, even though the original developers had tried to avoid it.

www.foodclub.org
"promote[s] community food-buying clubs. When I
first joined a food-buying club in Alsea, Oregon, I thought it was the
coolest thing ever. I never knew such a thing existed. I decided to use
my programming skills to contribute back to the people who started it and
made it work, and to help this great idea spread. I have written internet
software that makes the administrative and organizational tasks of
running a food-buying club very simple. It allows people to join their
orders together quickly, keeping track of prices for each item, and can
even handle splits, where many people split a single case of something.
It takes much of the headache out of combining orders to send to the
wholesaler, and then figuring out how much everyone owes after the order
comes in. ... Starting with release 0.15 you can run it simply as
standalone CGI scripts, eliminating the need for mod_perl."

"Like the old
Good Design
shows,
Workspheres
presents a mythology. It couples the idea of the Next with the belief
that we must collectively work our way toward it. The Next will not
descend from above, without our effort. We must toil to get there. On the
other hand, our travel expenses will be paid, and the work will be
performed with tools that have vast sex appeal. Isn't that a good deal?
... To see the work environment in temporal terms is to experience it as
an event more than a place. This experience may be the most profound idea
at the show. The electronic appliances are tools for creating events out
of relationships in space, time and sensibility. An event may be
hierarchically structured, as in a typical management chart, or its
architecture may be free-floating."

debugger and CPAN's Devel::ptkdb. The Perl debugger is powerful but
frustrating to navigate. CPAN's Devel::ptkdb, on the other hand, works
wonders by simplifying code debugging and thereby saving hours of your
precious time. In his discussion Zlatanov concentrates on explaining
debugging methods and general concepts rather than looking at specific
tools." (thanks

"This ignorance is profound, and stretches from
popular music, to television, to literature, to movies - Quebec culture
is a vast terra incognita to the Canadian mind, so foreign that Canadians
don't even notice their ignorance. How else to explain why no eyebrows

fighting over the title of "Canada's National Newspaper"? Last time I
checked, they weren't published in French, and no one was readng them in
Abitibi." But, whatthefuck, who needs culture when you've got

"Let me put this argument a different way. So
long as an NGO -- which could also be defined as a corporation of social
reformers -- remains outside the democratic system, it has no real
political levers. Its activists are not there, in the people's chamber,
to clarify the cause. And there is no practical link between the problem
they are devoted to -- no matter how obvious the problem -- and the real
action required to deal with it. PR victories -- which NGOs so often win
-- cannot be converted automatically into law. Nor should they be. Again,
we live in democracies. But the result is that there are no direct
practical links between the public debate and government action. The
public therefore becomes discouraged about the effectiveness of politics
because politics appear to be unresponsive to the public debate. And
because of their disconnection from the formal political process, the
corporations of social reformers themselves begin to look naive. All of
this results in what René-Daniel Dubois calls "la perte d'une culture
partagée" -- a fractured culture or a fractured society."

This document uses
CSS
kung-fu and a small amount of JavaScript for rendering its
contents. Efforts have been made to separate the form from the
content so if you are viewing this in a text-based browser it
shouldn't be an issue.
On the other hand it may look funny if you are viewing it in a
browser with incomplete
CSS
and/or JavaScript implementations. Internet Explorer 6 comes to
mind.
It's not that I don't love you. However, my time is limited and
I no longer feel very good about spending it working around any one
browser's inconsistencies with little, or no, confidence that they
will ever be fixed or otherwise made more inconsistent at some
later date.
On the other hand, if something is down-right
unreadable
please let me know and I will endeavour to fix it.

This page may not validate. It's not that I don't care, it's
just that I'm not aware of it yet. Part of the reason that I
rewrote the entire back-end for managing this site is that the old
stuff made it too easy for these kinds of mistakes to slip through
the cracks.
